A 2013/4 county-wide Jefferson County Historical Society program collected funding, purchased materials, and installed an identification sign at the location of each of the 144 historical Jefferson County one-room schools – except one. The West Salem School was located on the now-industrialized property near the Kroger gas station. It took years and alumni involvement to persuade property owners to allow the sign erection.
The picture below (copied from the Sentinel) shows the group with the sign they finally succeeded in getting erected next to the Kroger gas station in front of the only tree remaining on the former school property.
